You have made the decision to buy a handgun and now you have to choose if you want a revolver or semi-automatic. Both will have their advantages and limitations so below we will provide an overview of each and discuss some of the pros and cons so that you can feel more confident in your decision.

So let's get started.

SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOLS

Probably the most popular firearm type in the world and have been around for over a hundred years. These handguns are very common and are made by hundreds of different manufacturers. These are magazine fed pistol and gets their name due to the "automatic" nature of the handgun to eject the spent cartridge, then recock the hammer and load a new round into the empty chamber each time you pull the trigger.

Some of the main reasons for the popularity typically are due to the increased ammo capacity. Most semi-autos hold anywhere from 7 to 8 rounds all the way up to 14 or 15 rounds in the magazine, combine that with the ability to swap out an empty magazine with a full one in just a few seconds, it's simple to see where the popularity comes from. The advantages do not just sit with capacity either, generally a semi-automatic pistol is "softer" to shoot as the expelled energy and force from the fired round is partially absorbed by the mass of the slide and the recoil spring, reducing shock assisting you to stay on target for follow-up shots.

For these reason it can be a great choice, but there are some things you should keep in mind. Although semi-automatics can be very reliable, they do require the ammunition to cycle properly and consistently. If it doesn't, this can cause malfunctions that will need to be address before the pistol will fire. This could become an issue in a self-defense situation.

There also is a matter of size, though semi-automatics are made in many different compact and sub-compact sizes they do still tend to have some bulk to them. This may no matter if you are just looking for a home defense weapon but can be a concern for a carry weapon.

REVOLVERS

The revolver, also referred to as a "wheel gun" is a handgun that has a revolving cylinder on the frame that has multiple firing chambers that rotate to line up with the barrel when fired. The cylinder "revolves" when you pull the trigger or cock the hammer back into the fire position. These firearms have been in use for over two hundred years and are still relevant today.

As a first time gun owner, a revolver is a great choice, in part for is straightforward operation. You pull the trigger, the cylinder rotates, the hammer falls and the gun fires. It's really that simple, you pull the trigger, and it fires until it is empty. The simple operation can provide you with confidence that the handgun will function properly in a high-stress situation, and in theory would mean they are less likely to experience a malfunction or a jam.

As with the semi-automatic pistol, there are some considerations in regard to owning a revolver. Most revolvers have a capacity of 5 to 7 rounds in the cylinder. This is almost half of what the typical semi-automatic pistol can hold and reloading the revolver will take more time than simply dropping and inserting a new magazine like you would in a semi-auto pistol. To reload, you'll have to release and open the cylinder and replace each spent shell with a new round and close the cylinder to make the handgun ready to fire again. You can save time reloading using a speed loader for your revolver but it will take some practice to get become proficient is the speedy manipulation of reloading.
